Do I need a mouthguard? – Straight Talk About Teeth Vlog

We hope you all had a wonderful Easter and enjoyed your Spring Break! We know you’re all itching for warmer weather…we are too! *Hint Hint* Be on the look out for an FVO Summer surprise…announcement coming soon! But before that, lets turn our attention to our next blog, all about mouthguards!

Dr. M and the Smile Team at FVO want to keep our athletes and their mouths safe. In honor of April’s National Facial Protection Month, we are therefore making a point to post about the importance of keeping your teeth and mouth safe during sports. We support (and highly recommend!) the use of mouthguards in most sports, not just contact sports. While we typically think of high impact sports as being football, lacrosse, boxing and basketball, we also want you to consider wearing a mouthguard for any and all athletics whether classes, practices, or games. Karate, baseball, rugby, wrestling, dance, skiing are just some examples of other athletic activities in which your mouth could suffer impact from a ball, knee, or shoulder. There are few emergencies in orthodontics. Impact during athletics that may push the lip against the braces can cause soft tissue damage to the lips that is very uncomfortable for the patient and does usually constitute as an orthodontic emergency.

In this episode of Straight Talk About Teeth, Dr. Menjivar will answer the most popular question amongst her sport-loving patients, “Do I need a mouth guard?” We know many of you are involved in after school activities, including sports, and we want your smile to be protected!
