Women in Business Program

This month, Dr. Menjivar welcomed a local Girl Scout troop to the office as part of a Women in Business program. The discussion about what it means to be an entrepreneur and basic financials of running a practice helped these girls earn their financial literacy patch.

Their visit started with an office tour, and the girls got to see where all the magic happens from the waiting area, the treatment rooms, and even the lab where appliances are made. Dr. M emphasized that each room has a function and purpose, even the waiting room where visitors get their first impression! It’s important that the space is clean, light, bright and inviting with smiling team members to greet new visitors. Coffee, water, free wifi are all part of creating happy and satisfied customers, a cornerstone of her business philosophy.

Dr. Menjivar and the girls brainstormed traits of an entrepreneur and skills that are necessary to run your own business. The girls thought about how they could apply this to come up with creative ways to sell more cookies. Courage, confidence, hard work, determination, and creativity were just some of the many traits thought up by the group. Then, Dr. Menjivar talked about basic financials of running a business. The girls quickly came up with many expenses the office has including rent, lights, carpet cleaning, supplies, etc. Dr. Menjivar and the whole Smile Team were very impressed with the intellect and curiosity these girl scouts have, two traits that will surely take these girls far in life.

The Smile Team even educated the girl scouts on how we use alginate to make impressions of teeth. The girls got to take impressions of their thumbs and the impressions got poured up in stone. A 3D model of their thumbs in addition to t-shirts and water bottles were parting gifts which got many smiles and thumbs up! To top it off, this fun educational experience was a win-win for the girl scouts as they earned a Financial Badge!
